VOLUNTEER POSITION – LEVEL CROSSING MANAGER
The Wensleydale Railway is seeking a volunteer Level Crossing Manager to oversee the maintenance, compliance and inspection of circa 70 level crossings between Northallerton and Redmire. Reporting to the General Manager, the role includes:

Developing and implementing a robust inspection and risk assessment regime for level crossings;

Recruiting, training and coordinating a team of volunteer Level Crossing Auditors;
-
Liaising with other WR departments to ensure level crossing defects are appropriately prioritised and rectified;
-
Liaising with other WR departments to schedule level crossing upgrades and improvements where appropriate;
-
Coordinating WR’s communication with private level crossing users to promote safe use;
-
Interfacing with Network Rail to confirm continued eligibility for private level crossings and, where appropriate, initiating proceedings to close redundant crossings.
Essential attributes:
-
Possess, or be willing to obtain, WR Personal Rail Safety (PRS) and Person In Charge Of Works (PICOW) qualifications;
Able to self-supervise, exercise good judgement and manage own and others’ safety, including lone-working in remote locations;
-
Work effectively under own initiative;
-
Can interpret regulations and resolve ambiguity;
-
Diligence and attention to detail;
-
Excellent verbal and written communication;
-
Sound computer literacy, including MS Office and online database (HOPS);
-
Own transport to reach remote locations.
Previous railway infrastructure maintenance, safety and / or assurance management experience is desirable but not essential.

VOLUNTEER POSITION – LEVEL CROSSING AUDITOR
The Wensleydale Railway is seeking a volunteer Level Crossing Auditor (LCA) to join the small team which inspects and risk assesses level crossings between Northallerton and Redmire. The role includes:

Visiting assigned level crossings within the required intervals (annually for road crossings; biennially for others);
-
Completing level crossing inspections and risk assessments in accordance with LCA guidance and the relevant report template;
-
Taking measurements and photographs to support observations;
-
Completing a post-inspection report and risk assessment for each crossing visited;Recording the inspection and logging / updating observed defects using the online database;
-
Communicating findings to relevant WR departments to ensure efficient rectification of defects;
-
Relaying safety concerns to relevant individuals in a timely manner to allow effective risk management.
Essential attributes:
-
Possess, or be willing to obtain, WR Personal Rail Safety (PRS) and Person In Charge Of Works (PICOW) or Individual Working Alone (IWA) qualifications;

Able to self-supervise, exercise good judgement and manage own safety, including lone-working in remote locations;
-
Work effectively under own initiative;
-
Diligence and attention to detail;
-
Excellent verbal and written communication;
-
Sound computer literacy, including MS Office and online database (HOPS);

Own transport to reach remote locations.
Previous railway infrastructure safety and / or assurance experience is desirable but not essential.

VOLUNTEER POSITION – TRACK PATROLLER
The Wensleydale Railway is seeking a volunteer Track Patroller to join the small but vital team which regularly monitors the condition of our railway infrastructure. The role includes:

Patrolling your assigned section of railway (approximately 2 miles length) every 28 days to perform basic visual checks of the track and infrastructure;
-
Taking measurements and photographs to support observations;
-
Completing a post-patrol report;
-
Recording the patrol and logging / updating observed defects using the online database;
-
Communicating findings to relevant WR departments to ensure efficient rectification of defects;
-
Relaying safety concerns to relevant individuals in a timely manner to allow effective risk management;
-
By mutual agreement: acting as stand-in patroller on other track sections to cover absence of the resident patroller.
Essential attributes:
-
Possess, or be willing to obtain, WR Personal Rail Safety (PRS) and Person In Charge Of Works (PICOW) or Individual Working Alone (IWA) qualifications;
-
Willingness to commit to patrolling your section every 28 days (patrol dates have some flexibility to accommodate your needs; other patrollers cover pre-planned absence or sickness);
-
Able to self-supervise, exercise good judgement and manage own safety, including lone-working in remote locations;
-
Work effectively under own initiative;
-
Diligence and attention to detail;
-
Excellent verbal and written communication;
-
Sound computer literacy, including MS Office and online database (HOPS);

Own transport to / from your track patrol section.
